Maria Carrillo soccer players Maddy Gonzalez, Alison King and their coach, Debra LaPrath, are back home after spending the weekend in Raleigh, N.C., where the girls participated in the High School All-American game.

The NCAA Division I College Cup was also played in Raleigh over the weekend. In the high school game, the West and East played to a 0-0 tie.

“Ali and Maddie did great,” LaPrath said. “It was a weekend we’ll never forget.”

King will be playing for Loyola Marymount next fall while Gonzalez will compete for Santa Clara.

High-quality girls hoops

The Cardinal Newman Classic, contested last weekend, will go down as the highest-quality girls basketball tournament ever held in Sonoma County.

“The level of competition was tremendous,” Cardinals coach Monica Mertle said. “At least 15 future Division I players were here. We definitely want to keep this level of competition going.”

Sacred Heart of San Francisco defeated Newman 54-50 in the championship game.

When future pros battled

The Division 4 North Coast Section title game Saturday between football powerhouses Cardinal Newman and Marin Catholic brought to mind the teams’ last meeting, when two likely future NFL players started.

The schools have played 22 times, the most recent in 2012, when Newman lost 42-37 in a Division 3 semifinal.

But the game itself was less memorable than two names on the rosters: Marin Catholic quarterback Jared Goff - now a standout at Cal - and Newman’s Scooby Wright, a University of Arizona All-American linebacker.

Both juniors, Wright and Goff are touted as potential first-round draft picks when they turn pro.

Calistoga online

Calistoga High School has launched a new website for coverage of Wildcats sports. Calistoga fans can sign up for alerts and otherwise follow their favorite teams at www.calistogaathletics.com.

Athletic director Karen Yoder noted that the new website’s launch will be a timely development with the annual Gene Duffy Sr. tournament beginning today at the school.

Football might-have-been

The Redwood Empire’s 2015 football dreams died on the field last weekend with losses by Analy (in the North Coast Section Division 3 championship game) and Cardinal Newman (in the D4 game).

The teams that won those two games have moved on to the NorCal regional playoffs, and are each one step away from competing for a state title. Marin Catholic, which defeated Newman 38-21 last Saturday, plays Central Catholic in the Small Schools Open Division this Saturday in Modesto; Campolindo, which beat Analy 38-28 last Friday, hosts Milpitas in the III-AA Division this Friday.

Other NorCal matchups include Folsom vs. Bellarmine Prep (Division I-AA), Oak Grove vs. Clayton Valley Charter (I-A), Liberty vs. Del Oro (II-AA), Pleasant Valley vs. Saint Francis (II-A), Sacred Heart Prep vs. McClymonds (III-A), Sonora vs. Hanford (IV-AA), Sutter vs. Sierra (IV-A), Immanuel vs. Bradshaw Christian (V-AA), St. Bernard’s vs. Fall River (V-A) and East Nicolaus vs. Stone Ridge Christian (VI-AA).

Power schools De La Salle (Concord) and Centennial (Corona) are already slated to play for the championship in the Large Schools Open Division at Sacramento State on Dec. 19.
