Cloverdale comes up big to stun Mt. Eden

Division 5 Eagles seemed headed for defeat until a turnaround after halftime.|

Cloverdale, a Division 5 school based on enrollment, played giant killer Monday night in the opening round of the Sonoma County Classic at Piner as the Eagles defeated Division 2 Mt. Eden, 46-42.

Mt. Eden has 1,925 students while 407 attend Cloveredale.

In the first half, it appeared the large school would coast to a victory. The Monarchs led 27-15 at the break.

However, after a pep talk at halftime by Cloverdale coach Steve Bernardi, the Eagles came out of the break a different team.

In the third quarter, they outscored Mt. Eden, 15-3.

“The first half we were lackadaiisical,” Bernardi said. “We lacked intensity and effort. The second half our defense was good. That won the game for us.”

The defensive effort was led by Luke Pope and Adrian Bernardi.

On offense, Jayson McMillan topped all scorers with 17. Marcus Poe added 14.

CARDINAL NEWMAN 51, EUREKA 17

After an easy win in the opening round, the Cardinals will play Cloverdale tonight at 8:30.

Eureka managed only four points in the first half and trailed by 28 at intermission.

Eleven Newman players scored with Gavin Dove and Trevin Anderson-Soria leading the way with nine apiece. Cody Baker contributed eight.

“The best stat of the game was that we had more assists (13) than turnovers (10),” Newman coach Tom Bonfigli said. “Everybody played and the starters were on the court for just over a half.”

PINER 59, ?SANTA ROSA 56, 3OT

Andres Barragan scored all 10 of his points in the second and third overtime to help lift the Prospectors to the win.

Teammate Jace Foster nailed a 3-pointer late in the second overtime to keep the game going.

Foster finished the game with 13 points.

Like Barragan, Scott Erickson and Sean Terry finished with 10 apiece.

For Santa Rosa, Kalei Aukai and Tommy LaVine led the way with 13 each.

LAS LOMAS 61, ?RANCHO COTATE 22

This one was over after the first quarter as Las Lomas raced to a 22-2 lead.

Alfredo Pulido was the Cougars’ top scorer with eight.

In the Windsor Holiday Shootout:

WINDSOR 61, NOVATO 33

The Jaguars put 26 on the scoreboard in the third and that’s their highest scoring quarter of the season.

While the offense was operating on all cylinders, the defense held Novato to six points in the third.

“Defensive effort was the difference,” coach Travis Taylor said.

Gabe Knight led the offense with 15 while Parker Canady finished with 11.

ARROYO 47, ANALY 38

The Tigers led by one going to the fourth quarter but managed only six points in the period.

It was the lowest point total of the season for Analy. The Tigers came in averaging nearly 70.

Analy jumped out to a 15-4 lead after one quarter but at halftime the advantage was only three points.

DUBLIN 64, ?MARIA CARRILLO 16

The Pumas were ice-cold from the field and didn’t score more than six points in a quarter.

It was 17-2 after one quarter and 32-6 at intermission.

In opening round action in the girls West Coast Jamboree:

SANTA ROSA 46, ?BRADSHAW CHRISTIAN 26

At Vallejo, Emily Codding scored 21 as the Panthers advanced to the winner’s bracket of the Amethyst division.

FOOTHILL 59, ?MONTGOMERY 40

At Dublin, in the opening round of the Zircon division, the Falcons from Pleasanton pulled away in the second quarter.

Destiny Grayer and Shayla Newman led the Montgomery attack with 10 points apiece.

CONCORD 60, ?WINDSOR 47

At Martinez, the Minutemen spotted the Jaguars an early nine-point lead before rallying for the victory in the Quartz division.
