An estimated 1,200 fans saw the visiting Sacramento Republic score a 4-0 victory against the Sonoma County Sol on Saturday night in a preseason game at Santa Rosa High School’s Ernie Nevers Field. Both teams are preparing for the upcoming season, with the Sol competing in the National Premier Soccer League and the Republic in the USL, with hopes of joining Major League Soccer in the next round of expansion.

The Republic scored in the fourth minute, when Thomas Stewart scored on a penalty kick after Octavio Guzman was fouled. The Republic outshot the Sol 13-2 in the first half but were unable to score again as they took a 1-0 lead into the half.

After the break, Sacramento Republic came out strong, scoring just seven minutes into the half to take a 2-0 lead.

Emrah Kilmenta, James Kiffe and Thomas Stewart added goals for the Republic. Dominik Jakubek earned the shutout.

According to Sacramento Republic’s head coach Paul Buckle, it was a nice experience for his team as they prepare for the upcoming season.

“Both teams played with a great spirit,” Buckle said. “It was a very good game, and we certainly would like to come back again.”

Even with the loss, Sol’s head coach Vinnie Cortezzo was positive about the game and season. “To play two professional teams, first the San Jose Earthquakes (3-1 loss) and now Sacramento Republic, has a great experience for our team,” said Cortezzo. “In the first half we had a lot of possession but weren’t able to create many chances, but I’m very excited about the team we have this season.

“It was also nice to see a large crowd, with the Republic fans traveling well and Sonoma County showing they support high level soccer in the community.”

The Sol open their official season on Saturday, March 26, starting at 7 p.m. at Santa Rosa High School against the Sacramento Gold.
