Golfer Tony Finau joins embarrassing list of athletes hurt while celebrating

A day before making his first Masters appearance, golfer Tony Finau joined another exclusive club he wanted no part of on Wednesday by injuring himself while celebrating.

Finau began celebrating after shooting a hole-in-one in a Par 3 contest at Augusta National, then appeared to dislocate his ankle while jumping for joy. Finau then awkwardly popped his ankle back into place while concerned fans looked on.

The 28-year-old was able to recover enough (of his pride?) to keep playing in the informal event. But Finau declined to speak with reporters afterward, only telling them he was headed to get his ankle checked out.

Hopefully, Finau will be well enough for his tee time today. But whether he plays or not, he’s managed to etch his name among a list of other athletes whose celebrations became painful.

As a reminder to celebrate responsibly, here are some of the most embarrassing sports celebrations:

1. Gus Frerotte, Redskins quarterback. Frerotte is the poster boy for messing up a good thing. He celebrated a touchdown in 1997 by head-butting a padded wall, which left him with a sprained neck and a temporary loss of pride.

2. Bill Gramatica, Cardinals kicker. A first-quarter field goal got Gramatica so pumped up he had to jump for joy - which landed him on our list when he suffered a season-ending knee injury. Adding insult to injury, the TV announcer referred to him as his brother, Martin.

3. Kendrys Morales, Angels designated hitter. It’s too bad Morales couldn’t have designated someone to round the bases for him on his 2010 walk-off grand slam against the Mariners. With his teammates eagerly there awaiting his arrival, Morales jumped on home plate, slipped and suffered a broken leg. It certainly wasn’t the way he envisioned being carried off the field.

4. Lamarr Houston, Bears. In 2014, the ex-Raiders lineman first embarrassed himself by daring to celebrate a sack against then-Patriots backup quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo while the Bears were trailing by 25 points. Houston tore his ACL on the play, knocking him out for the season.

5. Nicolai Muller, Hamburg soccer. His high-flying celebration in August after scoring his team’s first goal of the season turned disastrous when Muller tore his ACL, ending his Bundesliga season.
