Gearhead: Pro-Tec Classic Certified Skate Helmet is what every kid should wear

Skateboard helmets are an absolute safety must, which is why most skate parks insist that riders of all levels and ages wear them. And in California and many other states, any rider under the age of 18 must, at all times, wear a helmet that’s been certified by the U. S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CSPC).

To do their job properly, skateboard helmets need to fit a rider’s head exactly. That requires measuring the head in question - and that’s a two-person job. The person doing the measuring uses a flexible tape measure (the kind used in sewing), and wraps it around the rider’s head, slightly above the eyebrows and ears. The tape measure should be close to the head, but not overly tight. Record the head’s circumference in inches, and you’re all set.

The Pro-Tec Classic Certified Skate Helmet has been consistently rated as one of the finest helmets for skaters. The helmet’s high-impact ABS shell is paired with a certified EPS protective liner for multiple impact protection, and compression-molded liner pads offer maximum comfort. Eleven vents help the rider maintain a cool head, and the adjustable strap and locking buckle ensure that the helmet remains in place. On top of all the safety built into the Classified, it comes in a range of colors and patterns large enough to capture the aesthetic fancy of just about any skater around. Aside from more than a dozen solid colors, there are helmets with Volcom Mag Vibes, pin striping inspired by skateboarder great Steve Caballero, and many others. At this writing, seven Classics on Pro-Tec’s website are on sale for as little as $24.98 (Classic Certified Blue Retro). Non-sale prices: $49.99-69.95. protecbrand.com

Pro-Tec’s website Store Locator indicates that its products are carried by Solo Bikes and Revolution Skateboard Shop, both in Santa Rosa.
