Skateboard helmets are an absolute safety must, which is why most skate parks insist that riders of all levels and ages wear them. And in California and many other states, any rider under the age of 18 must, at all times, wear a helmet that’s been certified by the U. S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CSPC).

To do their job properly, skateboard helmets need to fit a rider’s head exactly. That requires measuring the head in question - and that’s a two-person job. The person doing the measuring uses a flexible tape measure (the kind used in sewing), and wraps it around the rider’s head, slightly above the eyebrows and ears. The tape measure should be close to the head, but not overly tight. Record the head’s circumference in inches, and you’re all set.
