Bay Area dad pleads no contest to torturing puppy
REDWOOD CITY — A San Francisco Bay Area man accused of torturing and killing a puppy in front of his 4-year-old daughter has pleaded no contest to felony animal cruelty and misdemeanor child endangerment charges.
The San Francisco Chronicle reported Monday (http://bit.ly/1oFyYLG) that 32-year-old Alan Benjamin Velete of Redwood City will be sentenced to no more than three years in state prison in the plea deal.
The San Mateo County District Attorney's Office says the 4-month-old terrier puppy named Lucky became the object of Velete's rage when it defecated on the floor.
For weeks, prosecutors say, Velete punched and kicked the dog, sprayed household cleaner in its eyes, taped its mouth shut and fed it his psychiatric drugs. He eventually suffocated the animal.
Investigators say much of the abuse was done in front of his daughter.
