Camp Newman to spend summer 2018 at CSU Maritime Academy

Camp Newman, the beloved Sonoma County Jewish summer camp that burned in the Tubbs fire, will have a new home for next summer’s campers.

The Union for Reform Judaism, which operates Camp Newman, has had a camp presence on the West Coast since 1947, and in Santa Rosa since 1997. Summer 2018’s campers will be housed at CSU Maritime Academy in Vallejo. Camp Newman’s 485-acre Santa Rosa site off Porter Creek Road previously served as a cooking school for merchant mariners.

Camp Newman announced the move in a news release Friday.

Rabbi Erin Mason, camp director, said leaders are calling it “Newman by the Bay.”

“What the wildfire has shown us is how strong and resilient we are as a community,” she said in the news release. “Almost immediately, everyone rallied around us.”

Summer 2018 registration opens at noon on?Nov. 12 as a live event on URJ Camp Newman’s Facebook page.
