Coming off an MVP weekend in the Sonoma State volleyball tournament, Madelyn Densberger earned national and conference player of the week honors.

In four matches at the Seawolf Spike, the second-year player from St. Helena high had 45 kills. Showing her defensive skill set, Densberger also totaled 39 digs in the tournament, helping Sonoma State to a 4-0 record.

Densberger was named Sports Import/American Volleyball Coaches Association Division II National Player of the Week after picking up California Collegiate Athletic Association Volleyball Player of the Week honors.

The only other time a Sonoma State volleyball athlete won national player of the week honors was Christina (Difani) Lore in 1997.

Densberger's great weekend came as Sonoma State -- ranked 18th in NCAA Division II -- enters conference play with a 7-1 record.

Sonoma State hosts 22nd-ranked Cal State San Bernardino on Friday and 8th-ranked UC San Diego on Saturday. Both matches are set for 7 p.m.

SONOMA STATE RUNNERS TO HOST AT SPRING LAKE

Spring Lake Regional Park is the site for Saturday's collegiate cross country meet hosted by the Sonoma State women's team.

Teams from across Northern California will run the Sonoma State Invitational at the course in east Santa Rosa.

The women's 6 kilometer race is set for 9 a.m. Competing are Cal State Monterey Bay, Dominican, Humboldt State, San Francisco State, Santa Rosa Junior College, and UC Santa Cruz.

The men's 8 kilometer race follows at 9:45 a.m. Competing are Cal State Monterey Bay, Dominican, Humboldt State, San Francisco State, Santa Rosa Junior College and UC Santa Cruz.

Sonoma State is running its third women's meet of the season that concludes with the NCAA Division II West Regional, in Spokane, Wash., Nov. 9.

SRJC hosts the Pat Ryan Invitational, also at Spring Lake, on Oct. 18. The season concludes with the state championships, in Fresno, on Nov. 23.

CURTIN LEADS NO. 15 SEAWOLVES' SOCCER TEAM

A familiar name is back among league leaders with Sonoma State scoring machine Lauren Curtin pacing the undefeated Seawolves on the young soccer season.

Ranked 15th in NCAA Division II by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, the Seawolves are back in action this weekend.

Sonoma State hosts Cal State Stanislaus in the Seawolves conference home opener on Friday with game time set for 3 p.m. Stanislaus is ranked 11th in the nation, and the teams are picked to top the California Collegiate Athletic Association.

Game two of the weekend set is 2 p.m. Sunday when Cal State East Bay visits Rohnert Park.

Curtin, the NCAA All-American out of Maria Carrillo high, is tied for second in total points in the CCAA. Curtin has four goals and three assists in just four contests.

Last season, her first with Sonoma State after two years at Santa Rosa Junior College, Curtin scored 15 goals. Curtin's seven assists also led the team as she finished second in scoring in the CCAA.
