Women's health screenings set at SR conference

Menopause, nutrition, stress, diet, sun damage to skin, and other things

women don't discuss with their doctors will be the focus of a women's health

conference Sept. 10 at the Burbank Center for the Arts, 50 Mark West Springs

Road, Santa Rosa.

The conference is sponsored by A Woman's Place gynecology and counseling

practice, Sebastopol; Healdsburg General Hospital, and Palm Drive Hospital,

Sebastopol. It will include lectures, basic health screenings, and lunch.

Dr. Joseph L. Mayo, president of the Sonoma County Ob-Gyn Society and a

member of the North American Menopause Society, will speak on ''Changing With

the Change'' and ''The Three R's of Hormone Replacement Therapy -- Rewards,

Risks, Reactions.''

Dr. Mayo's wife, May Ann Mayo, a family counselor and author, will speak

on, ''Distribution of Gifts -Pretty Faces, Perfect Bodies, and Elder Statesmen

-- Confronting Body Image.''

Other discussion topics are identifying and preventing skin cancer, by Dr.

Cynthia Bailey; the emotional implications of menopause, by Catherine Barnard;

insomnia, by Dr. Susan Marantz and Dr. John Sassin; plastic surgery, by Dr.

Heather Furnas; and diet and women's metabolism, by dietician Cathi Sassin.

Screenings available all day and included in the registration fee are

cholesterol, glucose, osteoporosis, blood oxygen, lung function, podiatry,

depression, and breast exam.

Body composition screening is available for an additional $15. Testing will

be done by Joan Price, author of ''The Honest Truth About Losing Weight and

Keeping It Off.''

Conference hours are 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Registration, including lunch,

Youth Weight Management Class Orientation -- 7 p.m. Thursday at Petaluma

Valley Hospital, Burns Hall, 400 N. McDowell Blvd., Petaluma. An introduction

to upcoming 10-week Shapedown course, designed to help children and teens age

7 to 17 manage their weight and improve their health and self-esteem by

developing good eating and exercise habits. Orientation is free, and the

course, which is attended by youngsters and their parents, is $30 per family
