A Virginia man driving too fast Sunday afternoon in Mendocino County toward the coast suffered major injuries after he crashed his Ford Mustang into a tree off rural Highway 128.

Akiva Demarinis, 28, of Great Falls was flown to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital after the 3:15 collision, according to the CHP.

Demarinis had been headed west on the two-lane highway at a high rate of speed when he apparently lost control of the Mustang, the CHP said. About five miles east of the Navarro River bridge, near Highway 1, the Mustang ran off the south edge of the road, began to spin and crashed into a tree. Demarinis was wearing a seat belt.

Further details Monday weren’t available from the CHP.
