Two women were fatally shot Saturday night in Napa, police said.

According to a news release issued early Sunday, Napa police were dispatched shortly after 8 p.m. to multiple reports of gunshots in the 400 block of Riverside Drive, a residential area.

Responding officers found the wounded women down an embankment near the river, just off the street, which is less than half a mile south of Napa’s downtown, said Napa Police Lt. Chris Pacheco.

These are the first two homicides in the city of Napa in 2024 and the second and third homicides in Napa County, after the March 18 fatal shooting of a man in American Canyon, Pacheco added.

Each woman was shot at least once.

Emergency medical personnel at the scene were not able to revive one of the women, who was pronounced dead at the scene. The other woman was rushed to an area hospital, where she later died.

The Napa County Major Crimes team is investigating the shooting.

Officials said the Napa County coroner will release the names of the women who were killed after their families have been notified.

Pacheco would not say whether a suspect has been identified, though he did say there is “no indication of any threat to public safety.”

Additional details were not immediately available.
