Oakland Coliseum to host public John Madden memorial

The longtime Bay Area resident will be honored in a ceremony later this month.|

Raiders fans can join in honoring Hall of Fame coach John Madden at a public memorial at the Coliseum later this month.

The longtime Bay Area resident and Super Bowl champion will be honored in a ceremony the evening of Feb. 14, according to the NFL.

Tickets to the memorial will go on sale this week and benefit Madden Charities focused on education in Oakland.

Madden, who grew up in Daly City and lived many years in Pleasanton, at the age of 85.

He became the Raiders' coach at age 32 in 1969 and led the team to its to their first Super Bowl title, following the 1976 season and accrued a 103-32-7 record as the head man in Oakland.

After retiring from coaching just two seasons later, Madden became the face of the league to fans at home, working for all four major networks over 40 seasons on the air, revolutionizing the role of color commentator and becoming the namesake of the NFL's 'Madden' video game.

All the while, Madden remained a figure in the East Bay, where he was a hero to Raiders fans. He'll be remembered at his home stadium, where the Raiders played during his tenure and returned for 25 years before departing for Las Vegas in 2020.

The Coliseum has not announced exactly when tickets will go on sale, but they'll be available.
