About 200 Barack Obama supporters filled a park across from Mark West Elementary School in Santa Rosa on Saturday to build an army of volunteers for November's presidential election.

Organizers collected names and e-mails Saturday to strengthen a core of 1,000 volunteers in Santa Rosa, Cheri Ross, the Santa Rosa campaign's lead organizer, said.

That support helped give Obama a win in Sonoma County in the Feb. 5 Democratic primary over New York Sen. Hil-lary Clinton.

Saturday's event came about a month before the Obama headquarters in downtown Santa Rosa is to open in late July. The headquarters, located at Third and D streets, is expected to operate seven days a week and also be a base for local Democratic candidates, Ross said.

"I've never worked for a campaign before," said Trish Spence of Sebastopol, a newly retired teacher. "But I'm planning on volunteering."
