One person was sent to the hospital after a crash Wednesday evening that closed part of a Petaluma road for an hour and a half, police said.

At about 5:45 p.m. police were dispatched to an injury collision blocking West Payran Street south of Petaluma Boulevard North, according to a news release from the Petaluma Police Department.

A preliminary investigation found that a Mercedes coupe traveling north on West Payran Street turned left in front of a southbound Toyota 4Runner, police said.

The 4Runner driver was taken by paramedics to Providence Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital in Santa Rosa for treatment of a cut to the head. The driver of the Mercedes, who was issued a citation for not having proof of insurance, was not injured, according to Petaluma police Lt. Tim Lyons.

The crash closed Payran Street in both directions between Petaluma Boulevard North and Rocca Drive.

The roadway was reopened by 8:27 p.m., according to a Nixle alert.

Drugs or alcohol did not play a role in the crash, Lyons said, and it was most likely due to inattention and unsafe turning by the Mercedes driver.

The crash remains under investigation.

Police are asking for witnesses to the crash to contact Community Service Officer Nick Zavala at 707-778-4372.
