PETALUMA TOPS ANALY FOR RABINOVITZ TITLE:TROJANS GET STRONG TOURNEY PITCHING THAT INCLUDES WINS FROM 3 DIFFERENT STARTERS
Petaluma didn't have to wait until after spring break, when Sonoma County
League baseball resumes, to finally knock off the Analy Tigers.
Petaluma came from behind with four runs in the fifth inning Tuesday and
defeated the Tigers, 7-5, as the Trojans won their second Al Rabinovitz
Memorial Tournament in three years.
Petaluma (11-5) won Montgomery's annual tourney with strong pitching and
timely hitting. The Trojans won their first two tournament games Monday by one
run.
''We've had two tough losses against them (Analy),'' said Petaluma hitting
star Matt McDonald. ''This was like winning twice, winning the tournament and
some retribution.''
McDonald drove in the eventual winning run with a two-run double off the
left-field fence to cap the Trojans' four-run fifth.
Petaluma managed just six hits off Analy starter Nick Mutz, who pitched
gamely and turned in a surprising complete game.
''This year's team has shown the ability to come back,'' said coach Paul
Cochrun.
Tournaments can cause havoc with a team's pitching staff, but Petaluma got
wins from three different starters.
Dan McCarthy, named outstanding pitcher in the tourney, won on Monday.
Garrett Hagerla earned Tuesday's win and Austin Cleary and Nick McInnis
pitched well in relief.
Cleary struck out the two batters he faced in the fifth and induced a
double play in the sixth. McInnis survived a scare in the seventh, striking
out Mutz with the tying runs on second and third.
McDonald led Petaluma's offense with two doubles, and Ross Thomas went
1-for-2 with two RBIs.
Taylor Berenyi went 3-for-3 and Daniel Albert had two hits for Analy (9-6),
which defeated Petaluma 10-8 on Thursday and has won the first two of three
league games against the Trojans.
The Rabinovitz third-place game was also an all SCL affair, with Windsor
defeating Sonoma, 11-9.
Joe Van Cleave hit a three-run homer for Windsor and John Tuscher went
3-for-4.
Piner defeated Riordan, 7-1, for consolation honors and Montgomery defeated
Santa Rosa, 6-3, for seventh place.
WESTCOTT TOURNAMENT
It will be host Casa Grande playing Marin Catholic at 2:30 p.m. today for
the championship of the Adam Westcott Memorial Tournament.
Nick Wilcox threw a six-hit shutout as Casa Grande (10-5) defeated Hogan,
4-0, and Marin Catholic got a complete-game win from Jack Helfrich to knock
off Rancho Cotate (11-3), 6-4.
Casa coach Paul Maytorena picked up his 200th career win. Casa last won its
own tourney in its first year, 1998.
Rancho plays Hogan for third place at 11:30 a.m.; Maria Carrillo, a 10-8
winner against Vintage, plays Napa for fifth place at 2 p.m.
