Pilot killed in small plane crash near Bay Area airport
SAN FRANCISCO — Authorities are on the scene of a deadly small plane crash investigating the incident and could have the identity of the pilot later Tuesday.
Representatives from the Alameda County Coroner's office and the National Transportation Safety Board are at the crash site, about three miles northeast of the Livermore Municipal Airport. Livermore is an eastern suburb of San Francisco.
Alameda County sheriff's Sgt. J.D. Nelson says the Piper PA-22 crashed about 9 p.m. Monday.
Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Ian Gregor said that the crash occurred shortly after the pilot reported control problems upon departing the airport.
There was no further word on a cause, and the pilot's name was not yet available Tuesday.
The crash sparked a small brush fire that crews quickly brought under control.
