A San Francisco man has died in San Rafael's China Camp State Park, the Marin County Sheriff's Office said.

The man, 67-year-old Sherman Wayne Chen, died Tuesday for unknown reasons while riding an electric bicycle on China Camp's Bay View Trail. Authorities said Chen — who was wearing a helmet — lost control of his bike while riding up a hill and fell off a steep ridge line. First responders and paramedics located Chen on a ravine and administered CPR, but he died on site despite "extensive efforts."

The incident appears to be unusual for the park, which is known for its family-friendly atmosphere, lush wildlife and peaceful waterfront views. According to the previous SFGATE reports, the area once housed a community of Chinese immigrants in a shrimp-fishing village in the late 1800s. Today, it's a destination for camping, mountain biking, and swimming that's closely located to other attractions, such as Muir Woods National Monument and Mount Tamalpais State Park. Visitors can still see ghostly remnants of the village; its piers and huts are still standing.

California State Parks rangers and the Marin County Sheriff's Office are still looking into the cause of death.
