A firefighter suffered minor injuries early Sunday while helping battle a fire that destroyed a commercial building in Sonoma, officials said.

The first fire crew responding to the blaze did so just before 6 a.m., according to Sonoma Valley Fire Battalion Chief Brian Cyr.

They saw flames near the back of the vacant building in the 800 block of West Napa Street, Cyr said.

Additional firefighters responded and contained the flames to the back quarter of the structure in about an hour. Cyr said a portion of the roof collapsed during the fire.

Crews were on scene until about 8:30 a.m. as they extinguished hot spots and cleaned up debris.

One firefighter’s face was cut as he was putting out the flames, Cyr said, adding that he was taken to a hospital to be treated for the small laceration and then later released.

No one else was injured during the fire.

Investigators are still determining the fire’s cause and origin.
