The Sandman Hotel in Santa Rosa is undergoing a $4 million renovation that includes major upgrades to its 135 guest rooms and accommodations.

Stephen Yang — who purchased the hotel in 2015 and also owns The Flamingo Resort in Santa Rosa — said the renovations, which started in the summer, focused on upgrading guest rooms to match the overall quality of the hotel.

Guest rooms got a full makeover, he said. Bathtubs in many of the rooms were replaced with walk-in showers, and some existing showers got new fixtures. Live plants, murals by artist Ty Williams and work desks also were added.

Each room also got a full kitchenette, for guests on extended stays.

Upgrades are still being made to the hotel’s fitness center, which will have Peloton fitness equipment, new weights and other upgraded workout equipment.

An outdoor canvas dome will be added to house yoga sessions and meditation activities for hotel guests later this year. Yang said he anticipates the renovations will be complete by the end of the year.

“I just hope (our guests) walk away with an experience that’s more than just a room in Santa Rosa,” Yang said. “I want people to really engage with the property and love it for all the reasons we have for eight years.”

The Sandman underwent a $3.5 million renovation in 2017, when a pool house and bar were added at the property. Guest rooms were renovated at that time, as well.

Sandman Hotel general manager Mark Nelson said the renovations come just in time for the hotel’s 50th anniversary in 2024.

“All of our guests have given high compliments since our renovation,” he said. “The added items of new pictures on the wall, a live plant in each room and all that just elevates the expectation of our guests.”
