URSULINE ADVANCES IN SOFTBALL TOURNEY
Ursuline defeated Orem, Utah, 4-3 in nine innings in an opening-round game
at the Las Vegas softball tournament.
The game was 1-1 when an international tiebreaking rule was used, placing
runners on second and third starting the eighth inning. Both teams scored a
pair of runs in the eighth before Taylor Ford singled home the game-winner in
the ninth.
Katie Fraga allowed just one hit and went the distance for Ursuline.
Ashley Wright, Kellie Carlton and Alexis Cooper each had two hits for
Ursuline. Wright tripled and drove in a run.
ALL-EMPIRE SPORTS BANQUET
Redwood Empire High School athletic directors will soon receive nominating
forms for the 10th annual Press Democrat event scheduled for the evening of
Thursday, May27 at Santa Rosa JC.
Forms must be completed and returned via fax by Monday, May3 so that a
committee of sports reporters, coaches and school administrators can select
the top large- and small-school athletes and scholar-athletes of the year.
Comcast Cable Television's Dave Cox, an award-winning producer of the Game
of the Week, will emcee the event annually attended by more than 500.
SRJC RUGBY
Humboldt State's club rugby team will play the U.S. Coast Guard in the
opening round of the men's collegiate DivisionII national championships at
Nashville, Tenn., after defeating Santa Rosa JC in the Pacific Coast
Championships at Salt Lake City on Sunday.
Humboldt defeated SRJC, 28-16. SRJC finished the season 9-2-1, with both
losses coming to Humboldt.
Georgia Southern, Salisbury, Pittsburg, USC, Arkansas State and Northern
Colorado advanced to the Elite Eight tournament March17-18.
SRJC BASEBALL
The Santa Rosa JC baseball team has a bye today before traveling to
Stockton on Thursday to play San Joaquin Delta College.
The Bear Cubs (15-5, 13-2 Bay Valley Conference West) are ranked No. 8 in
Northern California. San Joaquin Delta (11-9, 7-6) is ranked No. 12 and plays
in the BVC East.
Mendocino College (6-15, 4-10 BVC West) hosts Solano College (12-11, 5-8)
today.
