Windsor fire displaces two residents

Two Windsor residents and their cats were displaced by a fire late Wednesday night in what was the city’s second residential fire in about 24 hours, emergency personnel said.

The 11:52 p.m. fire off Hembree Lane in the city’s northeast quadrant appears to have started in the chimney area of the attic, possibly caused by heat from the sheet metal coming into contact with combustible material, though she said electrical wiring could not be ruled out.

The residents reported smoke, popping sounds and a power failure before the fire erupted, fire personnel said.

Firefighters arrived at the Skylark Street home and found a working fire that, along with the firefighting effort, damaged the house sufficiently that it was no longer habitable, fire personnel said.

Fire investigator Cyndi Foreman said it appeared the fire had been smoldering for some time in insulation that had been blown into the attic. She said the damage isn’t extensive and can be repaired.

The Red Cross was called to provide emergency housing for two adult displaced residents and two cats, dispatchers said.

The blaze followed a destructive fire the night before that destroyed a group home about a mile away and damaged a neighboring house, officials said.
