A Petaluma police officer was hurt during an early morning pursuit Thursday that ended with officers surrounding the suspect as he swam down the Petaluma River, authorities said.

The cop was injured in the leg while trying to stop 31-year-old Jesus Carrillo, who was wanted on two outstanding misdemeanor arrest warrants, the Petaluma Police Department said. The officer recognized Carrillo, a homeless man from Petaluma, as he was riding his bicycle on East Washington Street near the Grocery Outlet.

Carrillo sped off when the officer approached him, heading toward the D Street Bridge before dumping his bike and fleeing on foot, police said. The officer followed on foot, chasing Carrillo over a fence.

Carrillo then jumped into the Petaluma River and started to swim south away from the officer, police said. Additional officers eventually arrived, surrounding the suspect so he wouldn’t escape.

Carrillo was arrested with the help of the Petaluma Fire Department. He was booked into Sonoma County Jail on suspicion of resisting arrest and violating the terms of his probations, as well as for the outstanding arrest warrants.

An arrest warrant for a man with the same name was issued Aug. 24 in an ongoing misdemeanor trespassing case, the Sonoma County Superior Court website showed.

The officer was treated for his injured but wasn’t able to return to work, police said. It’s unknown how long he’ll be out.
