A 10-year-old boy riding in the back seat of a Hyundai sedan suffered major head injuries Sunday in a southwest Santa Rosa crash.

The boy was flown to an out-of-county hospital after initially being taken to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital following the 1:20 p.m. collision at Yuba Drive and Stony Point Road, authorities said.

The crash occurred as driver Abeer Aqil, 22, of Santa Rosa - the seriously injured boy and an 11-year-old sibling were passengers - was turning from southbound Stony Point Road onto eastbound Yuba Drive, traffic Sgt. Steve Pehlke said Monday.

Driver Steven Burch, 62, of Santa Rosa was driving northbound on Stony Point in a Dodge Caravan and collided in the intersection with Aqil’s Hyundai Sonata as she began the turn, Pehlke said.

The 10-year-old was trapped in the wreckage and Santa Rosa firefighters cut open a back door to get to him, Santa Rosa fire Battalion Chief Matt Gloeckner said Monday.

Aqil and the 11-year-old had minor injuries and also were transported for treatment, Pehlke said.

Pehlke asked anyone with information about the collision to contact investigators at 707-543-3636. Neither driver was impaired, he said.
