Small gas leak leads to evacuations near downtown Santa Rosa

At least 16 homes were evacuated near downtown after a driver hit a gas meter on Tupper Street.|

A gas leak led to the evacuation of homes near downtown Santa Rosa on Thursday morning.

A car driving along Tupper Street between Hendley and Brown streets hit a gas meter about 10:40 a.m., Redcom emergency dispatchers said.

Santa Rosa police evacuated 16 homes in the immediate vicinity, according to the Santa Rosa Fire Department. Residents were allowed to return early Thursday afternoon after PG&E workers turned off the gas.

There was no reported damage to homes, dispatchers said.
