After evading capture for more than two years, one of two suspects in a deadly 2016 shooting in rural Sebastopol has been extradited to Sonoma County, allowing criminal proceedings to finally begin in what authorities described as a botched drug deal that left two people dead and a third person gravely injured.

Maria Teresa Lebron, 31, was booked into Sonoma County Jail about 4:30 p.m. Saturday on suspicion of five felonies, including two counts of homicide, attempted homicide, robbery and burglary, jail records show. She’s being held without bail.

Authorities had been searching for Lebron and her suspected accomplice, Robert Lee Randolph, 30, since they were identified as suspects in the Oct. 15, 2016, killings at a rural Highway 116 home in the Hessel community southeast of Sebastopol. They were both living in Philadelphia at the time.

Former teacher Nathan Proto, 36, of Sebastopol, and John Jess Mariana, 28, of Guerneville, were shot and killed inside Proto’s home. A 23-year-old woman also was shot in the head but survived, officials said.

Mariana, who was originally from the Philadelphia area, had arranged for Randolph and Lebron to buy marijuana from Proto, who grew pot at the property, according to the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office. Investigators have said the deal involved about 100 pounds of marijuana and cash estimated between $100,000 and $200,000.

By the time authorities had identified Randolph and Lebron, the pair had fled the state and returned to Philadelphia. Sheriff’s officials said they found evidence Randolph and Lebron had traveled to California several times in the six months prior to the shooting. In December, FBI agents helped track them down to an apartment in Austin, Texas, where local SWAT units helped arrest them.

Randolph remains in custody in the Travis County Correctional Complex, records show.
