Three people were injured in a car crash along a winding stretch of Highway 116 in Monte Rio that led to hours-long traffic delays on Friday afternoon.

A Lexus was snaking around Highway 116 heading west near Monte Cristo Avenue around 3 p.m. when it smashed into a redwood tree, said Monte Rio Fire Chief Steve Baxman.

“The car was totally destroyed, front end completely smashed in,” he said.

The driver and two passengers were transported to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital with moderate injuries, he said. Two were taken by helicopter and the third by ambulance.

“That stretch is a little bit rural and the trees get tagged or hit quite often,” said Baxman.
