A Santa Rosa family walking home Sunday afternoon from Montgomery Village were in a crosswalk when a man turning his Nissan SUV struck the mother carrying her newborn daughter, Santa Rosa police said.

The collision happened just after 4 p.m. at Sonoma Avenue and Farmers Lane.

Driver Napoleon Camacho-?Zarco, 36, told police he was trying to make a yellow light from westbound Sonoma Avenue to southbound Farmers Lane as he made the turn and was traveling about 30 mph.

The others in the family - an older daughter, the father and a toddler boy - were walking ahead of the woman in the crosswalk as they left the shopping center, police said. Nora Pike, 31, was carrying her one-month-old daughter, Elouise Pike, in a sling on her chest.

The two were hit by Camacho-Zarco, who was driving a Nissan Armada.

After hitting them, he pulled out of the intersection and stopped nearby.

Not far from the family was Jesse Parks and his wife, who saw the collision. “They were just walking. She was holding the baby and the dad was walking with his son, holding his son’s hand. This black SUV came around and hit her and she immediately fell over and hit her head on the curb,” said Parks, a manager with G&C Auto Body in Santa Rosa.

Santa Rosa firefighters and paramedics arrived, and the mother and child were rushed to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital.

The mother suffered a deep, 7-inch-long gash to her forehead and scalp plus other cuts. The baby had minor bruises, police said.

Police were continuing to investigate the incident Monday.
