Tellabs, which develops broadband technology in Petaluma, will lay off 150 employees companywide over the next year as sales continue to slump, the company said.

?We continue to align our costs with customer spending and current market conditions,? Tellabs said in a filing with federal securities regulators Monday.

It?s too soon to say how the layoffs will affect Petaluma, spokeswoman Marta Kwiatek said Wednesday. ?We haven?t notified employees yet,? she said.

Tellabs has about 145 workers in Petaluma, where it designs optical technology for broadband communications networks.

Based in Naperville, Ill., Tellabs has about 3,150 employees worldwide. Company sales dropped 22 percent in the first quarter as telephone and cable providers slashed capital spending.

Revenue from the broadband division, which includes Petaluma, was down 12 percent.
