San Francisco-based ridesharing service Lyft is expanding into Sonoma and Napa counties Friday, providing a mobile application that connects drivers with passengers looking for rides.

The move follows the recent North Bay expansion of Uber, a similar service. The so-called transportation network companies aim to offer rides 20 to 30 percent cheaper than taxis.

Lyft drivers are recognizable by the fuzzy pink mustaches that adorn their cars. Drivers must pass a background check, the company said.

Lyft operates in 30 states and throughout the Bay Area. Rides cost $1.35 per mile and 27 cents per minute on top of a $3.25 base fare.
