Santa Rosa man charged in father’s sledgehammer death
Prosecutors on Tuesday charged a Santa Rosa man with murdering his father with a sledgehammer.
Angelo Michael Lancaster, 33, was charged with killing Simran Khalsa, 64, on Monday inside the father’s Santa Rosa Junior College neighborhood home.
Police said Lancaster broke down the front door of his Wright Street Victorian, ran upstairs to his father and strangled him before bashing his head with the sledgehammer.
The two had been arguing over an undisclosed family matter, police said.
Lancaster, also known by his Sikh name of Kartar Khalsa, was arrested at the scene.
He appeared briefly in a Santa Rosa courtroom where a judge appointed a lawyer from the Public Defender’s Office to represent him.
He was ordered to return to court Oct. 31 for a possible plea.
Lancaster’s criminal record includes convictions for burglary and theft. He was previously deemed mentally incompetent to stand trial and was treated at Napa State Hospital, court records show.
