ARCATA - A university police officer in Northern California is recovering after he was shot while responding to a report of people fighting in the street.

Authorities say Humboldt State University and Arcata officers who arrived at the scene in downtown Arcata early Saturday morning did not see a fight. But a bystander told police that one of the people in the fight had brandished a handgun and directed them to a car.

Arcata police say as officers made contact with people in the car, a man got out of the rear passenger seat and opened fire, striking the Humboldt State officer. Police returned fire, striking the man several times. He was later pronounced dead at a hospital.

The officer was treated and released. Police identified the suspect only as a 26-year-old convicted felon from Antioch, Tennessee.
