Laytonville felon suspected of growing marijuana, possessing firearm

State law bars convicted felons from possessing firearms and ammunition, as well as cultivating more than 6 pot plants.|

A Laytonville man who previously served time in prison was arrested this week on suspicion of three felony offenses, including growing a prohibited number of marijuana plants and possession of a firearm and ammunition.

Deputies with the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office and searched on Monday the North Road residence of Jack Bailey Kuykendall, 72, and found 28 marijuana plants, according to the Sheriff’s Office. Because of Kuykendall’s status as a convicted felon, including prior serious offenses that require he register as a sex offender, state law prohibits him from growing more than six marijuana plants.

He is also barred from possessing a firearm or ammunition. Kuykendall was booked into Mendocino County Jail, where he bonded out Monday evening on $25,000 bail. Wardens with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife m assisted the Sheriff’s Office in the search.
