Student loan borrowers in Sonoma County have the lowest level of delinquency in the Bay Area, according to a study released this month.

Only 7.9% of student loan borrowers in Sonoma County were delinquent on their loan payments in 2018, according to a study by the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco and the San Francisco Office of Financial Empowerment.

The report broke down student loan data in the nine Bay Area counties. As of March 2018, there were 735,000 student loan borrowers in the Bay Area who collectively owe $26.6 billion - triple the amount 15 years ago.

Factors contributing to student debt include rising costs in tuition, housing, food and transportation. Stagnant wages have made it harder for student loan borrowers keep up, the study found.

The highest rate of delinquency in the Bay Area was Solano County, where 16.8% of student loan borrowers were delinquent on payments, the report said.
