Needing two wins Saturday to avoid being eliminated in the first round of the CCCAA State Tournament, the Santa Rosa JC baseball team got what it needed.
After losing the first game in the best-of-three series on Friday, the Bear Cubs roared back to notch 8-0 and 6-2 victories over visiting Reedley. Now, top-seeded SRJC advances to the Super Regionals and will host Folsom Lake in a best-of-three series beginning on Friday. The Falcons eliminated Sacramento in their NorCal Regionals.
In Saturday’s first game, Alec Rennard picked up the win by pitching 72/3 scoreless innings. He struck out seven, allowed six hits and didn’t issue a walk. Rennard got the only run support he needed in the first. Jake Scheiner blasted a homer over the left field fence and Mitch West scored in front of him.
Santa Rosa touched up Reedley, pitching for 12 hits including three by Matt Bone.
The Bear Cubs also got good pitching in the second game. Ezio Bruchler went the first four innings followed by Jared Noonan and Anthony Bender. Neither Bender nor Noonan allowed a hit.
SRJC took the lead for good in the fifth. Bryce Nagata and George Foster had key singles while Reedley pitchers walked two and also hit a batter. Four Bear Cubs finished with two hits apiece — Bryce Nagata, West, Scheiner and Foster.
Santa Rosa, the Big 8 Conference champs, are now 31-7.
