Hundreds of Montgomery High Students walked out of school Monday morning, their first day back since a fatal stabbing on campus last week.

Here is the latest:

1:16 p.m.

Students began to disperse, bringing the walkout and rally to an end.

1:12 p.m.

A crowd of 50 students rallied in front of the school’s main office, where school officials retreated, yelling, “No Justice! No peace!”

12:57 p.m.

“You failed him and you are failing us,” a student yelled in the direction of administrators, referring to Jayden Pienta.

The students began circling around school officials, yelling and demanding an apology.

“Go say sorry,” another student said. “Right now.”

Santa Rosa City Schools spokesperson Vanessa Wedderburn ushered school officials into the main office, but students stood outside and continued to call for them to apologize.

One student asked officials why they worked in a school if they don’t care about students’ futures.

“He doesn’t even get to have a future because of you guys.”

12:47 p.m.

Students walked back toward the school chanting “No Justice. No Peace.”

Some carried signs, including one that read “Protect Our Students.”

12:30 p.m.

Following a moment of silence, students called for school administrators to speak, including Tyler Ahlborn, one of the school’s two assistant principals, who was in the crowd.

The students began chanting, “Who keeps us safe? We keep us safe!”

12:19 p.m.

Holding a moment of silence, all students kneeled and bowed their heads.

Noon

A crowd of about 200 students expressed their frustration at the school administration. Students took turns giving speeches about safety measures they want and demanding “Justice for Pienta.”

Jayden Pienta, 16, was fatally stabbed during a fight Wednesday in an art class occupied by 27 students, including a 15-year-old freshman identified as a suspect.

Pienta’s mother and Olivia Cruz, who identified herself as one of Pienta’s best friends since kindergarten, spoke in tears about how they are devastated and will miss him.

Students gathered around the flagpole where Pienta’s memorial had been moved out of the rain.

As they took turns speaking, students clapped and called on each other to attend the school’s board meeting March 8.

The speakers debated whether or not metal detectors and school suspensions were effective, but many said Pienta was not a bully and the school could have prevented his death.

“All we can do now is honor Jayden by the way we live and act and be as people,” one student said. “The way he is remembered is through how we live.”

11:15 a.m.

Students poured from different exits of Montgomery High School as they made their way to the flag pole in front of the school.

Many students wore black and some held signs — one read, “Am I next?”

They passed a line of parents who clapped and cheered.
